Modern Day Dating? - Is modern dating better or worse than it used to be?

Introduction - Dating
Greetings. Well, here we are. Getting our start into the fall season. I hope everyone enjoyed their summer. This is the first week of posting my blog at its new time and date. Email me or leave a comment and tell me what you think. There must be something in the air because I have been getting a lot of emails about dating lately. One in particular stood out. An older woman just getting back into dating asked me to discuss early-day versus modern-day dating because she couldn't believe how much dating has changed. After she got divorced, she decided to take a break from being in committed relationships for a while and focus on herself. Something we all should do, whether we are in a relationship or not. We have to be good to ourselves first. One example she cited was a date she went on, and the gentleman who asked her out expected her to split the dinner bill when the bill came. This was new to her and not what she expected.
Many things change as time goes by and we get older, and the current generation brings in a new era with different thoughts and values. It wouldn't be fair of me to say that new practices are wrong. I think that is up to the two individuals. Before I begin, let me be clear about a couple of things. Many say women of today are more independent than decades past. I don't believe that is true. I believe women have always been, or wanted to be, independent, but society stopped them from exercising it. A few pushed society's norms and expressed their independence. These women stood out in history.
I fully respect women, and I love an independent woman. Even in my younger days, I was always attracted to an independent woman. That said, to have a successful relationship, I believe two people need to be equally independent of one another, even as they depend on each other. That encompasses the full picture of people's emotional, physical, and other needs. However, dating has evolved and is not the same as it was decades ago. In some cultures, though, things have not changed over the decades.
Regarding the email I received about her experience of splitting a dinner bill on the first date: if that is the arrangement both people want, they should make it clear before the date starts. NOT when the bill comes. I do have an opinion on this. To a large degree, it's the new generational way of thinking. I may be older than some of you, but I'm not dead, and I do date. I also believe, from my generation and upbringing, that if I extend the invitation, it's my place to pay the bill. That said, once two people get into an established relationship and want to take turns paying, that's fine. That is their choice.
Ladies, even if you're independent, you have to let a man be a gentleman, and men, you have to let the lady exercise her independence. Ahhh ... isn't that where the problem begins? Where is the happy medium? New school versus old school thinking. This is why establishing this up front is the only way it will work without one person offending the other. Many first dates today have become just a coffee meet-up. Maybe that makes sense. Personally, I'd rather do dinner, enjoy a cocktail, relax, and talk for a bit rather than sit in the local coffee shop. Isn't the first date partly about the atmosphere and experience? A coffee shop doesn't have much atmosphere. But when it comes to splitting the bill, I know many people who disagree. However, there's a difference between being an independent individual and going overboard with the concept, and sometimes that line is thin.
If any of my friends left a comment, they would tell you that if I invited you, no matter how many people, I'm paying the bill. PERIOD! In fact, I tell the waiter up front, GIVE ME THE CHECK. Now, that doesn't make me right and you wrong. It is just how I believe, and how I was raised.
Think about it, ladies: how many times has a girlfriend you know gone on a date and complained after the man expected her to pay half the bill? I'm not making this up. This is a real issue in today's modern dating world. What makes it more controversial is that both sides have valid points based on their beliefs.
Traditionally, more women feel that on the first date, the man should pay. On the flip side, many men feel that when it's a meet-and-greet with no guarantees, both people should split the bill. Dating is very expensive these days. The days of $40.00 for a movie, popcorn, and soda for two people are long gone, and dinner for two with drinks for 50 bucks at a nice restaurant is non-existent. Unless you consider McDonald's a nice restaurant and you BYOB. So let's dive into the before and now and see what we find, keeping in mind that your opinion and choice matter and ultimately decide how you will handle this.
IS MODERN DATING BETTER OR WORSE THAN IT USED TO BE?
Dating has evolved significantly over the decades, sparking debate about whether modern dating is better or worse than in previous eras. While traditional dating relied heavily on chance encounters and social interactions, modern dating is influenced by technology, changing values, and a broader understanding of relationships. Considering these factors, modern dating has both considerable advantages and notable disadvantages.
Some Pros of Modern Dating
Accessibility and Convenience with Dating Apps and Websites: Modern dating platforms like Match, Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge have made meeting potential partners more accessible than ever. Users can filter by various preferences, such as interests, location, and relationship type, leading to more targeted connections.
Example: Sarah, a 28-year-old marketing executive, moved to a new city and found it challenging to meet people through traditional means. After downloading Bumble, she quickly connected with a group of local singles, leading to meaningful relationships.
Greater Inclusivity and Diverse Options: Today’s dating opportunities are more inclusive of diverse sexual orientations, identities, and cultures. The rise of LGBTQ+ dating apps lets people find partners within their communities without fear of societal judgment.
Example: Joe, a transgender man, struggled to navigate dating in the past due to society's stigmas. Today, he finds comfort in using apps that categorize users based on gender identity and sexual orientation, fostering connections with others who share his experiences.
Expanded Social Circles and Global Connections: Modern dating apps let people meet others beyond their locality, leading to friendships and romances that transcend geographic barriers.
Example: Mia, a travel enthusiast, utilized an international dating app while backpacking in Europe, resulting in friendships and relationships that enriched her journey.
Communication Efficiency and Instant Interaction: Texting, voice messages, and video calls let prospective couples communicate quickly and build rapport before meeting face-to-face.
Example: When Mark began dating Lisa, they used video calls to discuss their favorite books, creating a deeper connection despite living in different states.
Some Cons of Modern Dating
Superficial Connections: Image Over Substance: The emphasis on profiles and photos can lead to superficial judgments, where attractiveness often outweighs compatibility.
Example: Emma, who struggled with body image issues, felt disheartened after being swiped left repeatedly on dating apps, reminding her of how surface-driven modern dating can be.
Ghosting and Lack of Closure: It's Easier to Disappear: The anonymity of online platforms has made it easier for people to suddenly stop communicating without explanation, causing emotional distress for those left behind.
Example: After chatting for weeks, Alex was ghosted by someone he believed he had a genuine connection with, leaving him confused and hurt.
Information Overload or Choice Paralysis: With countless potential matches at their fingertips, users may feel overwhelmed by options, leading to indecision or a lack of commitment. Setting personal dating goals, such as limiting options to five active conversations at a time, can help reduce choice paralysis.
Safety Concerns and Risk of Deception: The anonymity that apps provide can lead to myriad safety concerns, including catfishing and other forms of deception. Are the pictures current? Is the profile truthful? Are the people really who they say they are? Always research a potential date thoroughly and meet in safe, public places.
PRACTICES FOR SUCCESSFUL MODERN DATING:

Crafting a Genuine Profile: Take time to create a profile that reflects who you really are. Use current photos and write a bio that showcases your interests and personality. Authenticity attracts like-minded individuals.
Engaging Conversations: Start conversations with insightful questions that go beyond small talk. For instance, ask about their favorite travel destination or a book they recently enjoyed rather than simply saying, "How are you?" Consider framing your inquiry with, "What have you done recently that you really enjoyed?"
Establishing Boundaries: Clearly communicate what you want from dating, whether it’s casual encounters or serious relationships. This can help avoid misunderstandings and future heartaches.
Balancing Online and Offline Interaction: Make plans to meet up in person if a connection seems promising. Strike a balance between chatting online and enjoying activities together to strengthen the relationship. Suggest a casual coffee or brunch date, or whatever you both prefer, to reduce the pressure of who suggests it first.
EVERYTHING HAS ITS DOWNSIDE:
Over-Reliance on Technology: While dating apps are convenient, relying solely on them can hinder your ability to form genuine connections in real life. Engage in other activities or hobbies to meet people outside of the digital realm.
Disillusionment with Apps: As users navigate the modern dating world, some may develop a negativity bias toward dating apps because of failed matches or dating fatigue. Look at Jenna. After multiple frustrating experiences, Jenna deleted her app but found new connections when she re-engaged with a positive mindset and specific goals.
Misinterpretation of Intentions: Users may fail to communicate their dating intentions clearly, leading to mismatched expectations and disappointment. Take time to have honest discussions early on about your intentions and what you are looking for in a partner.
Fear of Vulnerability: The superficiality of modern dating can make individuals hesitant to be vulnerable, hindering their ability to connect deeply with potential partners. No one wants to be hurt or taken advantage of. Unfortunately, some people do this. This causes many to put up walls and not be totally forthcoming. I am not saying to let your guard down. I am saying, be cautious and open-minded at the same time. Time will tell if someone is sincere or playing a game.
NAVIGATING FRIENDSHIP AND DATING SIMULTANEOUSLY:
Meet Through Friends: Using your social circles can ease dating anxiety by helping you connect with people your friends can vouch for.
Maintaining Friendships During Dating: While pursuing romantic interests, maintain friendships to keep a support system in place. Striking the right balance prevents feelings of isolation. Think about when you were younger. When a friend started dating, you lost contact with them until they broke up, and like magic, they reappeared in your life.
Open Communication When Friends Start Dating: Many people start out as friends and, at some point, start dating. This often happens after many years of friendship. When transitioning from friendship to dating, make sure both parties are on the same page about expectations. This transparency can help avoid tension, and if it doesn't work out, they can still remain friends.
Dealing with Relationship Dynamics: Understand that friendships may change as romantic feelings develop. Respect boundaries and communicate carefully to maintain friendships through these transitions. Remember, in the ideal relationship, both parties are also friends, and that friendship should be maintained.
Consider A Few Things:
1. Ghosting: Navigating Communication Gaps:
One of the most common pitfalls in modern dating is ghosting, when one person abruptly stops communicating without explanation. For instance, after a few enjoyable dates, you text your partner to make weekend plans but get no response. Instead of spiraling into self-doubt, address the situation directly. You might send a brief message stating, “Hey, I noticed we haven't talked in a while. Is everything okay?” This opens the door to honesty and may encourage a response, either for closure or to rekindle the conversation.
2. Misinterpreting Online Profiles:
Profiles on dating apps can often lead to misunderstandings. For example, someone might list their favorite activities but not clarify how committed they are to them. If you match with someone who says they love hiking but later learn they went only once three years ago, it’s important to communicate your expectations. You can initiate a conversation by saying, “I noticed you mentioned hiking in your profile. How often do you get out on the trails? I love it and am looking for someone to join me regularly.” This can clarify interests and prevent future disappointment.
3. Overreliance on Technology:
Many singles lean heavily on texting and social media, which can create barriers to genuine connection. Imagine you've been messaging someone for weeks but still haven't met in person. The text conversation keeps flowing, but it feels superficial. To bridge this gap, propose a casual coffee meet-up with an inviting tone, like, “I’ve really enjoyed our chats! Would you be up for grabbing coffee this weekend?” Meeting in person can build a more authentic connection.
4. Pressure from Social Circles:
Feeling pressure from friends or family about your dating life can lead to undue stress. Suppose a friend continually asks when you’re going to settle down, creating anxiety around your dating choices. Address it directly in a friendly manner: “I appreciate your concern, but I’m focusing on taking my time to find someone I genuinely connect with. Let’s enjoy where I am now instead.” This keeps your priorities clear while reducing outside pressure.
5. Mixed Signals:
Mixed signals can be confusing, especially when someone texts you frequently but seems hesitant to define the relationship. If you're unsure where you stand, a candid conversation may help. For instance, during one of your meet-ups, you could say, “I’ve really enjoyed our time together, and I’d love to know where you see this going. How do you feel about our relationship?” This direct approach can help clear up any ambiguity.
6. The "What’s Next?" Conundrum:
After a few successful dates, you might feel unsure about what comes next. Maybe you’ve had fun and shared lots of laughs, but now you're on the fence about asking for a second date or making things more serious. Instead of overanalyzing, focus on what you value. If you’re interested in seeing them again, simply ask, “I had such a great time—would you like to plan something for next week?” This reinforces your interest and encourages mutual enthusiasm for moving forward.
7. Balancing Time Between Relationships:
If you’re dating multiple people, balancing time can become a logistical challenge. For example, you might find yourself double-booked with two dates on the same night. To manage this, prioritize honesty by communicating your availability upfront. You might text one person, “I’d love to hang out sometime! How about Thursday instead? I want to make sure we have quality time together.” This shows respect for both your time and theirs while making scheduling smoother. By addressing these common scenarios with clear communication and respectful honesty, you can navigate the complexities of modern dating more effectively.
Dating multiple people at the same time can be a lit fuse, waiting to burn down. Take care when doing this. The saying, "Honesty is the best policy," is true more often than it's not. Maybe establish that up front so both parties are on the same page. You'll know when it is time to stop and settle with one person. However, you both have the right to know what you are facing so certain expectations don't get out of hand.
IN CLOSING:
Sometimes in life we have too many choices. I know people who have had great success on dating apps, and others who claim it was a total disaster. Honestly, I tried it a couple of times. I met two wonderful women and dated them for some time. Eventually, as things progressed, we found that our long-term goals were different. To this day, we are great friends because we were honest with one another. Many are past that point in life where they want to go out to bars to meet someone, and you can't rely on meeting someone at work or the grocery store.
Admittedly, dating is much easier when you are younger, probably because you are out more and involved with more people and events. They also say that when it's your time to meet someone, you will. I believe that. How many times in your life did you actively try to meet someone and did not? You get frustrated. Then, one day, out of the blue, when you least expect it, someone comes into your life. Things will fall into place when they are meant to. Just be patient.
However, the multifaceted world of modern dating reveals a blend of experiences and perspectives. From the advantages of expanded reach and efficient communication to the pitfalls of superficial people and ghosting, each aspect presents its own challenges and rewards. By staying mindful of potential risks, individuals can navigate the complexities of today's dating world and improve their chances of finding meaningful connections.
Modern dating presents a complex blend of advantages and challenges when compared to previous eras. On one hand, dating apps and global connectivity let people meet potential partners beyond their immediate social circles, creating opportunities for diverse relationships. However, this digital convenience often comes with a price and a host of choices that can lead to frustration and anxiety. Ultimately, whether modern dating is better or worse may depend largely on individual perspectives and experiences. As society continues to evolve, those in the dating world must navigate these changes mindfully and balance technology's benefits with the timeless importance of genuine human connection.
