"Getting It Together" Part 3 of 3

In the last of this three-part series on "Getting It Together:, we will be discussing how to do it. In part one we discussed the concepts. In part two we discussed certain rules, or guidelines. Now it's time to put it all together. You can say I am crazy. It might be true, but putting things together in your life is no different than this three-part blog post series I wrote. It's a process. What have we learned so far, and what have I done?

  • I took a topic, (compare it to an issue in your life),

  • I broke it down into equal parts,

  • I choose the most pertinent information,

  • I summarized it,

  • I presented it.

Now, tell me what is different about this process as compared to things in your life? I'll help you. Nothing! No one can tackle an issue without first breaking it down to it's basics. You can try, but you will never resolve it. Look at it like a paintball tournament. You have your eye on your target. Out of nowhere, someone flanks you and shots you. Bang! Your dead. This is what happens each and every time you try to tackle an important issue and do not cover all your bases. Things will be coming at you from all directions at the same time while you are trying to keep your eyes on the target. Your goal, which is to resolve the issue. What is the first thing you do when you go into a dark room at night? Assuming you have power, you are correct. You turn on the lights. It's automatic. You don't even think about it.

The moral is simple. EVERYTHING HAS A PROCESS. A process that is derived from following the same steps each time. Eventually, it becomes habit. The more you do it, the better you get at it, until it becomes a learned behavior. You will do it automatically. Here is another example. You might it's stupid. It's not. It's the concept we are referring to. How many times have you had desert? Let's say you have half of a pie left. Do you sit and eat the whole thing at once? Of course not. You slice it into smaller pieces. By the time you are done, you may have consumed the entire thing, but you did it in smaller slices. Why can people follow this concept in almost everything they do, except managing their life, and resolving conflicts? The truth is we can. You just have to start. Follow these simple steps:

1. Look at the big picture, and figure out your goal,

2. Break it down into smaller segments and deal with them one at a time,

3. Figure out how those segments fit into your life,

4. Like a puzzle, place them where they belong,

5. Re-evaluate. Will it work, can it work, did it work.

If you follow these simple steps, eventually this process will become automatic. It will not require any thought. You will have learned how to get things together in your life. The key point is, separate what you can control from what you can't. What you can't control is not flexible. Why would you try to bend steel with your bare hands? Therefore, everything you have to do will revolve around what you can not control. The purpose for this is to gain time, lose stress, and face reality. There will be things you cannot change.
