How Full Is Your Glass?
INTRODUCTION:
As a reminder, next Monday night, 5/13/19, will be a video blog post. I enjoy receiving requests from anyone who has a topic that would like to see me talk about. I enjoy the variety. If you have something you would like to see me write about, or make a video post about, please feel free to send me an email. I will not use your name if you ask me not to. Tonight's topic is about a phrase and was requested by Samantha from Mississippi. Thank you for the request. The phrase, "How full is your glass, or, commonly know as, your glass is half full or half empty," is often misunderstood or used in the wrong content. We will be talking about its uses and meaning.
USAGE:
With most things, many are about personal choice. The reason being, things have different meanings for different people. Whenever we use a phrase or words, we need to keep in mind the way they are generally used, and how most with perceive them. I have heard this phrase used as it refers to work, a relationship, or other single uses. However, the intent of the phrase was used to refer to your life in general. Not just one aspect of it. I said this in so many of my posts that even for me, it sounds like a broken record. EVERYTHING in life revolves around PERCEPTION. Not only yours, but that of others, and in most cases, they will be different. Why do people perceive things differently is easy to understand.
1. Either the person speaking is not making their point clear,
2. People may not be using the correct words to define their thoughts.
When this occurs, which by the way is the vast majority of times, perception becomes blurred, and the true meanings get lost. We now have a situation of two people not being on the same page, therefore, communicating properly because difficult at best. The other factor in life that is critical is the ability for people to be able to EFFECTIVELY communicate. Failure to communicate is the number one reason for anything to break down. This includes, but is not limited to, work, family, relationships, and more.
The next challenge arises when people do not think before they speak. They do not take the proper care to be sure what they are writing or saying is being properly done to meet the meaning of what they are trying to say. Hence, the phrase, "Think about what you say before you say it. Once you say it, you can't take it back." All of the things I have mentioned speak to clarity. This further gets blurred by the number of emails and texting that is done. Unless the written words are clear, with no ambiguity, the true message never gets through, and in most cases, causes problems. It is inevitable that this will occur because we often speak from anger, frustration, or haste.
MEANING:
The glass is symbolic of your life. The glass is half full, or half empty is symbolic of your overall outlook on YOUR life. That is correct. It is referring to is your life, not live in general.
A 'glass-half-full person' is an optimist, someone who always thinks that good things will happen. Meanwhile, as you might imagine, a 'glass-half-empty person' is a pessimist, someone who always thinks that bad things will happen. (courtesy of dictionary.cambridge.org)
What makes it more interesting is the fact that most people will associate with those that have the same outlook as they do. Therefore, should a pessimist always associates with pessimistic people, they will never become optimistic individuals. These personality traits will be quite evident in how they present themselves, take part in things, especially at work, and are not usually the most fun people to be around. Socially, they will not do well in optimistic settings. The phrase, "Birds of a feather flock together," is true. To become smarter, we should associate ourselves with those who are smarter than we are.
IN CLOSING:
The most important thing to remember is to properly express yourself if you wish to be understood properly. As with anything else in life, there is a correct and incorrect way to do this. Trust me, arguing is never the answer. BE sure what you want to say, and you are saying it, so it is clearly understood. When you use a phrase, be sure you are using the correct phrase as it refers to want you want the other person or people to perceive.
