INTRODUCTIONS - Teenagers
Greetings. As a parent who raised three children through their teenage years, who are now adults, and as someone who experienced my own teenage years like you, I guess we all have some degree of experience. We also have the present-day teenagers who may be reading this post. No one ever said it was easy or that it was going to be easy. However, some parents and teens handled it better than others.
It's common knowledge that under normal circumstances, most parents try to raise their children the same way they were raised. I do emphasize normal circumstances because there are always exceptions to the rule. Ask yourself this. Do the rules apply the same over the decades, or do they change with the times, or should they? I think when it comes to morals, values, and work ethic, these should be constant. However, as society evolves, so must our way of thinking.
When we were teenagers, what we thought really did not fit into life's equation. It was a matter of doing what you were told. PERIOD. Your opinion really did not hold much weight. Times are different now. Teenagers want to be heard and have a say in their lives. Frankly, this could be a good thing, but it could also backfire if not properly monitored. Today, teenagers have far greater opportunities than many of us had growing up. Technology alone has contributed a great deal to this change. However, it is paramount that parents truly know their teenagers to foster good communication and be an integral part of their teenage years. These are critical years in their emotional, physical, and mental development as they face many challenges. Let's move on.
WHAT DO TEENAGERS FIND INTERESTING?
In our rapidly evolving, diverse culture, understanding what captures teenagers' attention and interest has become crucial for parents, educators, and marketers alike. The challenge lies in deciphering the many factors that influence teenage interests, which can vary significantly based on personal experiences, social dynamics, and technological advancements. So, what exactly do teenagers find interesting?
The Answer:
Teenagers have a multifaceted spectrum of interests. Teenagers are drawn to a diverse range of interests, influenced by social media, technology, peer groups, and emerging trends. Recognizing this variety allows for a more meaningful engagement with them. Below is a guide to help decode the interests of teenagers:
Embrace Technology and Social Media: Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat play a pivotal role. These platforms not only serve as entertainment but also as spaces for creativity and connection.
Explore Gaming and E-Sports: Online gaming is not merely a pastime; it has transformed into a competitive arena where teens forge friendships and showcase their skills.
Dive into Current Trends and Pop Culture: Keeping up with trending shows, music, and celebrities can provide insights into collective teen interests.
Encourage Creative Expression: Many teenagers find interest in outlets such as writing, music, or visual arts to express their individuality.
Support Social Justice and Activism: This generation is often passionate about social issues and values platforms that promote change.
Promote Physical Activities and Hobbies: Activities ranging from sports to yoga provide an essential counterbalance to the digital world.
Cultivate Personal Development: Topics related to mental health and personal growth have gained traction, with teens seeking content and resources that empower them.
EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY and SOCIAL MEDIA
The adolescent experience today is deeply intertwined with technology. For teens, social media platforms are more than just apps; they are essential lifelines of communication and creativity.
Pros and Cons of Social Media
Pros:
Connection: Social media allows teens to connect with friends, share experiences, and find communities that resonate with their interests.
Creativity: Platforms like TikTok inspire creative expression through challenges, tutorials, and art, allowing teens to showcase their talents.
Cons:
Pressure: The pressure to maintain a certain image can lead to anxiety and stress.
Disinformation: The prevalence of misinformation on social media can negatively impact one's worldview.
Actionable Tips:
Encourage Healthy Social Media Use: Promote discussions about digital well-being and finding a balance between online and offline life.
Incorporate Creative Social Media Projects: Introduce projects that encourage teens to create positive or educational content.
EXPLORING GAMING and E-SPORTS:
Gaming is no longer just a pastime; it’s a fully-fledged cultural phenomenon. The rise of e-sports has made gaming a competitive sport, with players competing in tournaments for money and fame.
The Experience of Gaming
Consider a group of friends who started playing "Fortnite" together in their teenage years. As they navigated the game’s challenges, they formed a bond that extended beyond gaming; they shared life challenges and personal victories through online chats.
Pros and Cons of Gaming
Pros:
Skill Development: Gaming enhances problem-solving skills, hand-eye coordination, and teamwork.
Social Interaction: Multiplayer games often require collaboration, fostering friendships.
Cons:
Addiction Risk: The immersive nature of gaming can lead to addiction or neglecting responsibilities.
Social Isolation: Excessive gaming can lead to reduced real-world social interaction.
Set Boundaries on Gaming Time: Encourage moderation by setting time limits for gaming to prevent it from interfering with academic responsibilities.
Promote Positive Gaming Experiences: Discuss the importance of teaming up with friends versus playing alone to nurture social skills.
CURRENT TRENDS and POP CULTURE:
Understanding popular culture is paramount in connecting with teens. From trending music to the latest Netflix series, pop culture serves as a significant identity marker for many adolescents.
Example
A hypothetical scenario: A teenager starts a podcast discussing the latest episodes of a trending TV series. This endeavor not only allows them to explore their thoughts but also connects them with peers who share similar interests.
Engaging with Trends
Pros:
Fostering Discussions: Awareness of trends can encourage meaningful conversations between adults and teens.
Creating Shared Experiences: Watching a popular show together can foster bonding moments.
Cons:
Fleeting Interests: Trends can change rapidly, leading to instability in interests.
Pressure to Keep Up: Some teens may feel pressured to stay informed about every trend.
Tips:
Create a Family Culture Around Trends: Make it a tradition to watch a trending show as a family and discuss your favorite parts.
Encourage their Unique Interests: If a teen prefers indie music over mainstream, support their preferences as valid interests.
ENCOURAGING CREATIVE EXPRESSION:
Creative outlets are essential for teenagers as they navigate their identities. Whether through music, art, or writing, these avenues allow them to articulate their thoughts.
Possible Ventures
Consider a teen who starts a YouTube channel to share original music. This pursuit not only allows for creative expression but also serves as a platform for gathering feedback and evolving their craft.
Benefits of Creative Expression
Pros:
Emotional Relief: Art and music can act as therapeutic outlets.
Skill Development: Engaging in creative activities fosters new skills and boosts confidence.
Cons:
Criticism: Feedback, especially negative, can impact their self-esteem.
Overwhelm: The pressure to produce ‘perfect’ work can lead to burnout.
Tips:
Facilitate Access to Tools: Provide materials or subscriptions to music or art platforms that can support their creative interests.
Host Open-Mic Nights: Encourage teens to showcase their talents in a low-pressure environment.
SUPPORTING SOCIAL JUSTICE and ACTIVISM:

Teenagers today are increasingly engaged in social issues. Their interests often reflect a broader concern for justice and activism, which fosters a sense of responsibility towards the world around them.
Participation in Movements
Imagine a teen who starts a local campaign raising awareness about climate change. Their involvement not only develops leadership skills but also connects them with a community of like-minded peers.
The Impact of Activism

Empowerment: Advocacy can lead to a greater sense of agency and empowerment.
Community Building: Connecting with peers who share similar values can create strong bonds.
Cons:
Burnout: Continuous involvement in causes can lead to emotional fatigue.
Conflict: Holding strong opinions may lead to conflict with peers or family.
Care: Care must be taken with the types of groups our teenagers join. Teenagers can be easily manipulated and end up in the wrong kind of group. One that promotes violence, harm, or destruction.

Facilitate Volunteering Opportunities: Help them find volunteering options in areas they are passionate about.
Encourage Discussion of Issues: Create a safe space to talk about their views on social justice issues.
PROMOTING PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES and HOBBIES:
Amid the allure of technology, physical activity remains a vital aspect of teenage life. Engaging in sports, dance, or hobbies ensures a balanced lifestyle.
The Experience of Physical Engagement

Health Benefits: Regular physical activities promote health and well-being.
Team Spirit: Participating in team sports cultivates collaboration skills and friendships.

Set Realistic Goals: Help teens set achievable fitness goals to keep them motivated.
CULTIVATING PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:
The focus on mental health and personal growth is more pronounced than ever. Teenagers are interested in resources that promote self-improvement and mental well-being. Many teenagers struggle with trying to identify who and what they are. Peer pressure is high, and they can be easily influenced.
Example
Imagine a teenager who discovers a podcast focused on mental health. By actively engaging with the material, they learn to navigate their emotions better and develop coping strategies for everyday stressors.
The Value of Personal Development
Pros:
Increased Awareness: Engaging with personal development content fosters self-awareness.
Support Systems: It connects teens with resources that validate their experiences.
Cons:
Information Overload: With so many resources available, choosing the right one can be overwhelming.
Variability in Effectiveness: Not all resources will resonate with each teen uniquely.
Tips:
Share Resources: Introduce books, podcasts, or articles that focus on personal growth to spark discussions.
Encourage Journaling: Promote consistent journaling to express thoughts and reflect on experiences.
IN CLOSING:
When I speak with teenagers, I always reflect on that famous speech from a Rocky movie where Sylvester Sattone tells his son, "Life is not about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward."
In this writer's opinion, raising teenagers is not about smothering them or giving them complete freedom. It is about finding the balance between the two that works for everyone. Parents need to trust their children as much as children need to trust their parents. Most of the time, that requires both sides to discuss reality. Meaning, the dangers that are out there, as well as the rewards, and how to recognize both.
From the influence of technology and social media to the significance of personal identity and social connections, it is clear that their preferences are shaped by a blend of cultural, social, peer pressure, and emotional factors. As they navigate this pivotal stage of life, their interests not only reflect their current realities but also provide insights into the evolving trends that will shape the future.
Drinking, drugs, sex, and many other topics should be openly discussed. The parent that says, By the way, if I had one dollar for every time I heard this statement in my over 30 years as a Paramedic, I'd be rich today, "My child would never do those things." Is living in a world with blinders on. I've seen teenagers from the richest families to the poorest families fall into dangerous traps in the world of substance abuse, up to and including death.
Through open communications and mutual involvement, by staying attuned to these interests, parents, educators, and adults can foster meaningful connections and support teenagers in their exploration of the world around them. Ultimately, embracing and engaging with what excites and motivates them can lead to more productive dialogues and relationships across generations.
We do not live in a perfect world; we never have. In fact, we live in a more dangerous world than ever before since these various addictions that are not best for us are more easily available and on the rise, and even more difficult to battle. There is not enough funding to combat them, and the healthcare system is overwhelmed with patients as a result of their usage. We have more teenagers in the mental health system than ever before, and the numbers are rising each year.
"It is estimated that 32% of U'S adolescents (ages 12 to 17) receive some form of mental health treatment or service, such as outpatient therapy or prescription medication; however, an estimated 20% of teenagers have unmet mental health needs, meaning they require care but are not currently receiving it." This could be due to many reasons. I'm not a doctor and cannot tell you why, but I can tell you that when I was a teenager, my generation did not feel nearly the types of pressure that today's teenagers do. Probably because we didn't have as much available to us then, as teenagers do today. I do attribute this greatly to social media. Social media can be both a blessing and a curse. This is why communication is so critical. Obviously, these factors will vary from family to family, and we all must choose what works for us. Anytime we are in doubt, seeking professional help is always the best option.
The risks are higher now than ever before. However, the rewards when dealt with properly are greater than ever before. Find your balance. Here are some common questions and answers I wanted to share with you.
